Job Title: Executive Director, Specialty Society Management Services

The Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED), a statewide professional association which provides representation and advocacy for physicians, seeks an Executive Director.

POSITION SUMMARY

Direct and coordinate the Society’s activities in the Specialty Society Management Services Division.  Oversee the Specialty Society Management Department which provides contracted management services to 30+ state and national association clients. Provide overall direction to assure that the efforts of the department and staff are driven by the Society’s strategic plan and are advancing that plan. Serve as the Society’s expert on issues pertaining to the Society’s Specialty Leadership Cabinet to enhance the productive working relationship with specialty organizations. Foster strategic connections and partnerships between PAMED and state and national medical specialty groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree with 10 years’ experience in Association Management, CAE preferred;

Big Picture thinking and ability to gain buy-in;

Client recruitment and development experience;

Financial acumen required with proven track record of leading an association with a profit;

Decisive and able to problem-solve

Excellent communication skills with the ability to be diplomatic, yet direct;

Project management, change management, and supervisory skills;

Proven ability to build relationships with clients and internal/external constituencies

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

High incidence of after-hours or weekend meetings and statewide travel to meet deadlines, respond to leaders, react to crises, and attend Society business meetings and events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1)      Oversee Specialty Society Management Services which provides contracted management services to 30+ associations. Advise SSMS Directors on:

a)       Client development and client problems

b)      Department services and operation

c)       Personnel matters

d)      Profitability issues

2)      Interact with physicians on an executive level to build relationships, answer questions, solve problems and convey the value of membership.

3)      Assure that physician needs are continually assessed through a variety of formal and informal mechanisms and that needs are shared thoughout the organization and incorporated into decision-making.

4)      Work with PAMED Management Team to direct the Society’s membership in development of strategy and operations including campaigns targeting the specialty societies in recruiting and retaining members and interacting with state specialty leaders to promote the adoption of new strategies and techniques required by our changing member market.

5)      Identify opportunities to form partnerships with specialty societies and strengthen relationships; coordinate those projects.

6)      Advise department directors with regard to problems, politically-sensitive situations, and strategy to deal with initiatives; handle performance problems, ensure optimum staffing levels for each functional area, and redirect staff to focus on emerging needs.

7)      Oversee budget development and adherence.

8)      Serve as the Society’s staff expert on issues pertaining to the Society’s Specialty Leadership Cabinet:

a)       Provide executive support to the Specialty Leadership Cabinet (issue management, agenda/meeting planning, reports).

b)      Communicate with specialty society officers, staff, and/or boards to ensure awareness of State Society activities (especially as they relate to specialty concerns) and a productive working relationship.

c)       Oversee the maintenance and integrity of our databse of specialty society officers/staff for communications purposes.

9)      Maintain understanding of current and emerging health care issues (legislative, regulatory, managed care, etc.), State Society programs and activities, initiatives and actions of the Board of Trustees, etc.

10)   Implement a process to oversee client satisfaction on a regular basis.

11)   Manage the administrative affairs of one or more associations (function as Executive Director, i.e., recommend policy, Board/Committee staffing, newsletters/publications, correspondence, convention planning, PR projects, budget/finance).
