One of the primary assets and values of most assoc iations is their ability to advocate for the shared interests of their memb ers. It doesn't matter what industry or interest your association represent s, there are federal, state, and local decision-makers making policy that m ay affect your members. Influencing these decision-makers is not easy and o ften takes multiple strategies and approaches. There is no question the lar ge centralized advocacy and professional lobbying an association may provid e is critical to the interests it represents. However, how do you better le verage your association members at the local level to help advance the asso ciation's overall policy initiatives?
The "Power of Grassroots Advoca cy By Your Association" will provide many tools, ideas, and suggestions to help your association's advocacy efforts. This hour-long 'boot camp' on gra ssroots advocacy for your members will cover many topics, including:
Aaron Shenck is the Executi ve Director of PAPSA (www.pa psa.org), which is the statewide association in Pennsylvania that repre sents over 100 private career and technical colleges and other specialized trade schools, along with several dozen affiliated companies. He has served in this position since October 2014. Before coming to PAPSA, Aaron's prior experience was in legislative affairs and government relations. He served for two years as the Deputy Secretary of Legislative Affairs for Governor T om Corbett, two years as Director of Legislative and Government Affairs for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, seven years with the Pennsylvani a Senate, and four years with the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He also interned in college with the United States Congress. He graduated in 2000 from Millersville University with a BA in Political Science and earned a Master in Public Administration from Penn State University in 2008. Aaro n has spoken at dozens of schools throughout Pennsylvania about public advo cacy, government relations, and the legislative process and he has presente d at several conferences.
